From 12 to 2009 by LancerMoo From 12 to 2009 by LancerMoo
(Sorry for sloppy writing, if too many people cant read it i'll go fix it)
Something to start the year off with.

I've always thought that one perk of being an artist is that you get to keep your imaginary friends, and nobody laughs at you for it.

Shina is the one constant throughout almost all my sketchbooks. I created her when I was around... 12-13, back when the only thing I used the computer for was to play FFXI. (Also way before I dated my sketchbooks, unfortunately.)
I always love seeing other people do these. Seeing the evolution of one character through the years is incredibly interesting to me. And back when I was just starting to draw, seeing that some of my favorite artists were once at my level was a huge motivator.

Now that I'm posting my own, it's kind of a weird feeling. I feel like I've just gone through my mom's old photo album, and have gathered a bunch of my baby pictures to post online...

-As I stated above, before 2006 I did not date any of my stuff. As a result I had to guess at some of these, but for the most part it's pretty accurate.

-No, I don't consider her a "furry", although she is, well, furry. =P
To me, I've always thought of her as a mythical creature of sorts, like a satyr or mermaid (or werewolf, hur hur). Think of her what you will, that's just my own perspective.

-No, she's not me. In fact, if she were real, she'd probably find me kind of annoying. =P

-I didnt really have any nice sketches of her from this year. For the most part, my efforts have been focused elsewhere lately...

Hey, this is really cool. I've never actually seen an artist do one of these before (but I'm pretty new here). I'm pretty sure I'm still around your 16yo skill level, which is why I've neglected posting things (that and very little free time). But this has definitely helped inspire me to keep working! Thanks!

interesting to see how your character has evolved from a cutesy anime style into a more mature more realistic look

It really is, I know I never thought I'd be at the skill level I am now, that's for sure. :)
Ahh I don't really know about being good at that age, for the amount of time I put in I always thought I was pretty awful. :XD:

Alas, no artist is ever confident in their work at a young age. Trust me, I would know ;P

I'm not sure how good I was as a kid, If anything I always thought I was pretty horrible compared to the time I put in...

Hopefully by the end of the year, the best stuff of 2009 will look like a child's scribbles in comparison. :XD:

Haha, you were quite amazing even at such an early age :)
Kinda makes me want to make an overview like this for my characters, but I think I'd find that I don't have any drawings of them I'd ever want to display :D
Good job on keeping a consistent character through all these years, don't know many people who do that :)

Believe me, I wasn't too anxious to display any of this stuff either. :XD:

I can't even begin to imagine where my art would be without my characters. Before I had them, sure, I would just doodle around, but it was always aimless and unfocused... making up my own characters gave me a reason to draw, if that makes any sense. They gave my art purpose, which for me, is a huge deal.
Maybe as a result I've ended up with problems I wouldn't have otherwise, but I'd say being handicapped is better than not drawing at all...

Hmm, I never thought of it that way, that's interesting :)
I do find myself making a lot of backstory and such for my characters, or so to say, making them real characters, but on the other hand I do know some people who can draw pretty amazing stuff without giving it as much as a spare thought. Then again, how much is it art if it doesn't have any meaning? :D
